Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim says he wants Kobbie Mainoo to stay at the club but has given no guarantees that will happen.

The 19-year-old England midfielder was link with a move to Chelsea earlier this week amid ongoing debate over a proposed contract extension.

United chiefs say they are focus on securing the futures of Harry Maguire and Amad Diallo, who will be free to speak to foreign clubs from January 1.

The pair have recently agreed to a new contract, but Menu remains on his current contract, which has two and a half years remaining.

Sources close to the youngster feel they are in a strong position to demand a big deal given he is an international and a regular for United under Amorim and Ten Hag in recent times.

However, the issue is complicate by United’s acknowledge financial regulatory turmoil and the knowledge that selling homegrown players would give them more flexibility in signing new players.

“Our idea is to always keep the best players and the players we have built for this club,” Amorim said.

Man Utd are aware of the potential negative reaction from fans if Mainoo is sold and it is likely he will remain with the club for the rest of the season.

“I love my players very much. I want to keep them, especially the talented ones,” Amorim said.

“It’s a tough time and I’m very happy for Cobbie. He’s improving,” he said.
